Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi, 18 km from Rameshwaram, is the southern tip of the Rameshwaram Island. It is the closest point on the Indian coast to Sri Lanka. It suffered major damage in a devastating cyclone in 1964, which washed away the rail bridge connecting the town to the mainland, with a trainload of passengers. The remains of the town can still be seen now. The Kothandaramasamy Temple, that survived the disaster, attracts many visitors. According to myths, Dhanushkodi is the place where Vibhishana, a brother of Ravana, surrendered before Lord Ram. This location has favourable conditions for adventure sports like surfing.
