Dhanteras Festival

Dhanteras Festival, also known as Dhantryaodashi, is celebrated on the 13th of Ashwin. It falls two days before Diwali and marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations. On this day, people worship Lord Yama, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

This festival is of special significance for the practitioners of Ayurveda, as there is a belief that Dhanwantari - the patron god of Ayurveda - first manifested on this day. Another legend associated with this festival is of the 16 year old son of king Hima and his young wife, who tactfully saved her husband from the clutches of death. Hence Dhanteras Festival is also known as Yamadeepdaan.

Houses and business premises are adorned on this day. The doorsteps are made colorful with Rangoli designs to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Lakshmi-Puja is performed during the festival. A variety of sweets are also prepared.
