Deshnok Devi

Deshnok Devi is a mythical figure worshipped in the Karni Matha temple at Deshnok. The temple is regarded as one of the most potent shakti (Goddess) shrines in the country. Legends put her as a historical figure who was born at a village near Phalodi in 1387. She belonged to the charan caste. There was a belief among the charans that Goddess Durga took avtars (incarnations) among them as Sagats, who were supposed to have supernatural powers. Karni Matha performed several miracles such as reviving the dead and water divination. Ultimately she became the most powerful cult of the region. She is worshipped mainly by the Jats and low-caste farmers. She is considered as the patron goddess of the people who rely on their camels for a living.
