Darkot




Darkot is a charming village situated 15 km from Munsiyari in Pithoragarh District. It is located at an elevation of about 1,700 m. The village lies on the Milam Glacier trek route. Gori River flows through it. Darkot nestles among forests of rhododendron, juniper and birch. It offers fascinating views of the Nanda Devi Peak and the deep valleys around. Nearby places to visit are Daranti, Maheshwari Kund, Balati Farm, Namik Glacier, Ralam Glacier and Sailapani. It is an ideal base for trekking and mountaineering.

Bhutiyas, people of an Indo-Tibetan tribe, live in this region. The village houses show the culturally rich lifestyle of their inhabitants. The figures of Jyoti Patta (life giving female spirit) and Ganesh are painted on the walls. Special designs are created in rice paste on the floor. The village is also rich in handicrafts.

The nearest airport is Pant Nagar Airport and the nearest railway station is at Kathgodam. Darkot is connected by road to Munsiyari.
