Darbhanga, the district administrative center of Darbhanga District, is located on the banks of the Little Baghmati River.

In ancient times, it was a part of the Brahman kingdom of Mithila, and during the 14th century, it came under the administration of Mughal Dynasty.

Darbhanga is the site of Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University (1961) and Lalit Narayan Mathila University (1972).

Darbhanga is a major trade center for neighboring districts. Located on a fertile alluvial plane, it is rich in sugarcane and tobacco.

Darbhanga is on the National Highway 57. Patna Airport, about 102 km away, is the nearest airport. Darbhanga Junction Railway Station, served by North Eastern Railways, has connections to major cities such as Muzaffarpur.
