Dakhraini




Dakhraini, a local festival of Kinnaur District in Himachal Pradesh, is also a tourist attraction of the region. Celebrated in July, the festival has many colouful displays as part of the rituals. In the main event during the day, the main deity, a goddess, is brought out to the accompaniment of much dancing, music and feasting in a ceremonial manner. Garlands made out of rare and auspicious zongor and loskar flowers, brought from the Kand peak, are offered to the deity. These are distributed among the villagers after the festival. On that day, members of families where death had occured, climb the hill here, the abode of the goddess, and put up food and fruits as offerings. They also erect white flags inscribed with Buddhist chants for the peace of the departed soul.
