Corbett National Park




Established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park, Corbett National Park is one of the most sought after national parks in Asia. It is located in Uttaranchal and is India's first national park and the first sanctuary to come under Project Tiger. The park was named after the hunter-naturalist turned author and photographer, Jim Corbett who lived in the region and contributed in setting up this park. Ramnagar 51 km south is the nearest town.

Corbett Park has a varied topography comprising of hilly and riverine areas, temporary marshy depressions, plateaus and ravines. It supports a variety of vegetation making it the ideal habitat for the Tiger and its prey. The park is home to the magnificent but wary and elusive cats, together with their smaller cousins, the leopards. Other species found in the region include chital, sambar and wild boar, elephants, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, python and around 350 species of birds, including Giant Hornbills and many birds of prey.

The park has a coverage area of 1,200 sq km. The tourist season is slotted between November 15 and June 15. The park will remain closed during the monsoon from June 16 and November 14. Other places worth visiting in the region are the Crocodile Pool, Dhikala Machaan, Getheryo Library (Dhikala), Corbett Museum (Dhangadi gate), Corbett fall and Garjia Devi Temple.

Visitors can move about in vehicles inside the park area after making entries at the respective gates. Tourists can drive their own cars inside Corbett or can hire vehicles from Ramnagar. Permits are necessary for entering Corbett Tiger Reserve. For day visits, permits are obtained at the respective Entry Gates. However, permits for night halts are issued at the CTR Reception Office at Ramnagar.

Pant Nagar Airport, 50 km away, is the nearest airport. The nearest international airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport at New Delhi. The nearest railhead is Ramnagar Railway Station. Moradabad Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh is the major railway station nearby.
