Chorukodukkal

A Custom of Lakshadweep Islands



Chorukodukkal is a custom mainly practiced in Kavaratti of Lakshadweep Islands. This custom is popular among the islanders and it is performed for raising the fund needed to meet the expenses of family functions. 'Chorukodukkal' means to give food.

The host invites his friends, neighbors and relatives for a feast. During the feast, the guests donate cash, rice, goats, hens, cows etc. The host maintains an account of all of such contributions. The host has to make appropriate returns on similar occasions, when his guests need help.
