Situated at an altitude of 2900 m above sea level, Chopta is considered to be one of the most striking and quaint spots in the Garhwal region of Uttaranchal. The views of the Himalayan ranges from Chopta are breathtaking. It is also a favorite ground for trekking expeditions.

Tungnath (3 km), Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary (7 km) and Ukhimath (31 km) constitute nearby excursions.

Chopta is located in Chamoli District on the Gopeshwar-Ukhimath road and is 39 km northwest of Gopeshwar. Nearest airport is Jolly Grant (226 km) at Dehradun. Closest railway station is at Rishikesh (210 km).
