Chettipatti

Famous Jain heritage center

Chettipatti is a famous Jain heritage center in Pudukkottai District, Tamil Nadu. The place is also known as Samanar Kundu. It has a dilapidated temple, locally called Vattikoil. The main diety is one of the tirthankars. Sculptures of Mahavir and Parshwanath can be seen at the site. Two pillars with a lion base and a separate sculpture of a lion reveal the artistic excellence of the tenth century Jain workmanship. The inscriptions found on basement of the collapsed temple mention the names two disciples of Matisagaracarya - Dayapaiar and Vadiraya. Matisagaracarya is believed to be a temple administrator in the past.
