The Chennakesava Temple is located at Belur in Hassan District of Karnataka. It was built by a local ruler, who belonged to the Hoysala dynasty during the 11th century to commemorate the victory of the Hoysala's over the
Cholas at Talakad. The temple is exceptionally large and many of the decorations were added later in the 12th and 14th centuries. The temple is enclosed in a paved compound and includes a well and a water tank.
The Chennakesava Temple consists of a shrine, an open hall and a platform and is built in the
Hoysala architectural style. The temple is renowned for the world famous angled bracket figures called ‘mandanakai’, female figures depicting dancing or ritual poses. These figures are unsurpassed in detail and artistry. Almost all the major Hindu deity is represented at the internal pillars and lintels of the temple. The gopuram of the temple, built in 14th century, has sensual sculptures of dancing girls.
The temple is open to non-Hindus and the admission is free. The temple is open from morning till the close of
pujas, which is around 2030 hrs. The pujas are held mainly at 0900 hrs, 1500 hrs and 1930 hrs.
