Chatai Mat

Chatai is a mat woven from the leaves of date palms. This kind of mat is woven by the women belonging to the Muslim community of Birbhum, Bankura and Purulia districts in West Bengal.

The fan-shaped leaves of the date palms are split into strips. The strips are dyed in shades of magenta, green and blue. They are woven into mats containing attractive geometrical patterns. No thread is used in the weaving process.
