Changlang District is located in the south-eastern corner of the state of
Arunachal Pradesh. It is covered with picturesque hills and has an area of 4,662 sq km. Changlang District has a population of about 0.1 million. The district is bounded by the
Tinsukia District of
Assam and
Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh in the north,
Tirap District in the west and Myanmar in the south-east. The name 'Changlang' derives from the local word 'changlangkan,' meaning a 'hilltop.'
The people belong to the tribes of Tangsas, Singphos and Tutsas. The Tangsas and Tutsas believe in the existence of a supreme being called ‘Rangfrah’. People of the Singphos tribe believe in
Buddhism. The main occupation of the people is agriculture and allied activities. The tribes usually prefer platform type houses. Owing to the mountainous nature of the terrain, the climate varies considerably. The months of December through February are cold, and August is the hottest. Most of the rainfall is received during June-October. Noa Dihing, Namchik and Tirap are the major rivers.
