Champanagar

Champanagar is a beautiful town located in the eastern part of Bhagalpur, about 220 km from Patna. This is a historic place which was blessed by the visits of both Buddha and Mahavir. Tradition says that Champanagar got its name from the large number of champaka trees around it. This is the place where Buddha is believed to have taught numerous discourses, including the famous Kandaraka Sutta. Champanagar once held a large tank, named Gaggara's Lotus Lake, in which thousands of lotuses grew. Today, there is another lake called Sarovana Talarb which dates back to Buddha’s period. The place is also archeologically important. Numerous Buddha statues have been found from here. Historians record that Basupujya, the 12th Jain Teerthankar, was born here. A Jain temple has been built here to commemorate the memory of Basupujya. Bhagalpur Junction Railway Station is the nearest railway station and the nearest airport is at Patna.
