Chaang




A favorite drink of the Sikkimese, Chaang, alternatively called Tomba or Jaanr, is a mild, fermented, alcoholic and sweet-sour, cereal-based beverage. Traditionally, it is made from fermented millet and is served in bamboo containers called ‘Tongba’ with hollow bamboo pipe. It is also made from fermented rice, maize, wheat, barley, or cassava root using yeast. It forms an integral part of every ritualistic ceremony of the various ethnic groups of people of the Sikkim Himalayas. It is also called as .
