Cane Products of Nagaland

Cane, being available in large quantities, is a major raw material for the crafts in Nagaland. The products range from the general-purpose basket to the ornaments worn by the tribal people.

Artistic creations made with cane include bowls, mugs and containers featuring multi-colored engravings. Ornaments usually contain fillets made with cane, with detailed designs on them. Ornaments like necklace, armlets, bangles, headbands and leg-guards crafted from cane, contain fine work of craftsmanship. Men belonging to some tribe wear neckbands, armlets and leggings made from red colored cane. Headgears like helmets and hat frames are also made with cane.

Household products include baskets, decorative mats and furniture. A haversack is usually constructed by sewing a thick cloth over a cane frame. This haversack is decorated with shells and beads.
