Brokpas occupy the Dras (also spelt as
Drass) Valley in the
Ladakh range of
Jammu and Kashmir. These tribes are believed to be the descendants of the Dards of Chilas in the Gilgit region. They speak a language known as Shinna. The
Balti language is also used to communicate with other people. Animal husbandry, agriculture and allied occupations are their main sources of income. Brokpas follow the Aryan traditions and culture. The men wear a long woolen gown held at the waist by a girdle of cloth. The other apparels include woolen trousers and a headgear consisting of a turban. Brokpa women wear loose gowns, which cover the whole body.
