Bardan Monastery

Bardan Monastery is a 16th century monastery located on the banks of the Zanskar River in Leh District of Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 15 km from Padum.

Belonging to the Drukpa Kagyupa order, the major community of the monks is the Stakna Rinpoche. Built on a huge rock, it is a multi storied complex. Dukhang, the most important room, lies on the ground floor. The first floor has a shrine dedicated to Maitreya, the Buddha of future ages.

Bardan Monastery has an impressive location, raised right from the edge of cliff, presenting a charming portrait. It can be accessed from Padum by trekking four hours down stream.
