Bair Songs

Bhagnaul Songs

Biar is a type of song prevalent in the Kumaon region of Uttaranchal. It is also known by the name Bhagnaul. The word ‘bair’ literally means ‘dispute.’ As the word suggests, this song is sung in a manner of debate. It involves two singers, who sing in a manner of questions and answers. This debate through the song continues until one singer concedes defeat.

The Biar songs are a major attraction during fairs and festivals. There is no particular topic for these songs. The singers simply choose the topic just before the performance.
