A distinguished Marathi poet, B S Mardhekar (1909-'56) has to his credit several poems, novels, operas, and a play. He was the first to introduce a modernist consciousness and an idiom appropriate to it in
Marathi.
Shishiragam, Kanhi Kavita, and Anakhi Kanhi Kavita are his major poetic works. Western influence is prevalent in his poetry.
