Ayiramkaliyamman Temple

Located in Tirumalairayanpattinam village, near Karaikal, in Pondicherry, Ayiramkaliyamman is a temple with historical prominence. It is devoted to Goddess Amman.

According to a local legend, the deity of Goddess Amman has been found from a silver box floating in the sea. It was accompanied with some inscription in palm leaves, which stated that it should be worshipped with 1000 items daily. It is difficult to perform such a puja daily, so the pious people of the area decided to perform it once in five years.

A three-day long puja is conducted once in every five years during the Tamil month of Baisakhi. After the puja, the idol is dismantled part by part, and is kept back in the box. This box is opened only after five years.
