Ashta Math of Udupi

Ashta Math of Udupi is formed by the disciples of Sri Madhva, who founded the famous Krishna Temple of Udupi on an auspicious Makara Sankranti day, nearly 700 years ago. The ashta monks (eight monks) are responsible for conducting the daily worship. They follow a code of worship that came into existence from the 16th century and was proposed by Sri Vadiraja Swami. Every math gets two years to worship the Lord after which it is passed on to the next math. This form of rotation of the worship of the Lord is called Paryaya. The swamiji in charge of the worship is called Paryaya Swamiji and his math is called Paryaya math. The Paryaya festival is held once in two years, in January. The headquarters of the Ashta math is situated in eight buildings in the Car Street.
