Anurupa Mukherjee

Born in the 1920's, Anurupa Mukherjee is a mother to tribal girls in Tripura. Seeing how the tribal girls miss out on life's opportunities, Anurupa decided education was the key to a better life for these girls. She started coaching classes with the idea of getting girls to work at their own pace and convenience. Anurupa Mukherjee is popularly known as 'maani.'

The Tripura Adivasi Mahila Samithy was established in 1953 under the leadership of Anurupa at Krishna Nagar by women social workers. The goal is to bring rural tribal women into the development process. Anurupa also played a significant role in the affairs of the state and at the national level in defining and vitalizing the role of women in community welfare, especially in the fields of education and social service.

Anurupa Mukherjee passed away in October 2000, but the good work she started continues.
