Alipurduar is the headquarters of Alipurduar railway division, the largest division of the Northeast Frontier Railways. This division holds an important position in the railway map of the country since it connects the northeastern region with the rest of the country. It is also the gateway to the neighboring countries of Bhutan and Bangladesh.
Alipurduar is surrounded by major tourist destinations renowned for their natural beauty. Notable among them is the Dooars Valley, Jayanti(11 km), Bhutanghat (45 km) and Rajabhatkhawa (15). Another major nearby attraction is the Buxa Fort (30 km), which contains the ruins of the detention camp used by the British rulers to hold the Indian freedom fighters.
