Alai Darwaza

Alai Darwaza is the main entrance to the whole Qutab Minar Complex, in Delhi. This magnificent gateway built in red stone, is one of the most treasured gems of Islamic architecture built entirely in Islamic principles of accurate construction and geometric ornamentation.

A square building, the Alai Darwaza has arched openings on all sides. The northern arch is semicircular, while the other three are shaped like pointed horseshoes, in the classic Islamic style. It is exquisitely garnished with beautiful carvings of geometric symbols and inscriptions in Naqsh script. The decorations in red sandstone, mixed with the inscriptional bands in white marble, are eye-catching.
