Ahmedabad Mahavir Swami Temple

Mahavir Swami Temple is a highly revered Jain shrine situated at Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Here the presiding deity is Bhagwan Mahavir, along with the metal idols of other twenty three Tirthankars. A silver coated carved fort of Astapadji and a bluish crystal idol of Bhagwan Shantinath are also notable. This ancient temple is assumed to belong to a period earlier than the year 1619.

Rebuilt in 1879 by Sheth Umabhai Rupchand, a local resident, this temple has excellent sculptural carvings of goddesses on the open square and it also possesses a large dome. One can also find the marble built model of Pavapuri, the place at which Mahavir attained nirvana, upon the terrace. No electric bulbs are used within the temple other than the lamps burnt with coconut oil. All these ensure a calm and peaceful ambience.

It is considered auspicious to visit the temple on the first day of the bright half of the month of Kartak (March-April) and on the first day of the bright half of the month of Bhadrapad (mid of September to mid of October).
