Agatti, one of the famous islands in Lakshadweep
, is located 459 km from Kochi
. Covering an area of 2.7 sq km, the island is 6 km broad and 1000 m wide.
The climate of the island is hot, comparing to other islands. Wahabis of Islam are the major inhabitants of this island. The main occupation of the people is fishing. Coir and copra (dry coconut used for oil production) production are the subsidiary industries.
Agatti and its satellite islands Bangaram, Tinnakara and Parali feature sparkling coral reefs, turquoise blue lagoons, silvery beaches and coconut palms. The sea around the island offers excellent scope for water sports, excursions on fiberglass boats, fishing trips, and day cruise to near by uninhabited islands. Agatti has an exceptionally beautiful lagoon on the western side. Coral growths and multi-colored fish are abundant in this lagoon.
Agatti is the only island with an airport. Accommodations are available in the Dak Bungalow and the Agatti Island Beach Resort. Tourist Huts, with one or two twin-bed rooms, are also available.
