Abhaneri

Abha Nagri

Located about 95 km from Jaipur on the Jaipur- Agra Road, Abhaneri is famous for its amazing step wells or baoris and the 7th century Harshat Mata Temple. The village was established by the illustrious King Raja Chand (King Bhoja) who ruled over the Gurjar kingdom in the 9th century AD. Its original name was Abha Nagri, so called because of goddess Harshat Mata who is believed to spread 'abha' or 'brightness' all over the place.

Abhaneri is now in ruins but the place still echoes of a glorious past. The carved sculptures and other relics reflect the rich tradition of this place. Abhaneri is best approached by road, buses ply between Jaipur and Agra.
