University of Burdwan, established in 1960, is located at Rajbati in Bardhaman District. A State University, its territorial jurisdiction extends over five districts - Bardhaman, Hooghly (excluding Serampore subdivision), Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia.
A multidisciplinary university, with about 22 postgraduate departments in various disciplines, it offers courses in physical education, BEd, foreign languages, computer applications and population education. The Distance Education Wing of the university imparts education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university has also established a Rural Technology Centre to impart vocational training.
A museum and art gallery at Rajbati, maintained by the university, displays artifacts of prehistoric period.
