Phodong Monastery




Built by Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal, Phodong Monastery is situated at Phodong in North Sikkim District. It follows Karmapa sub-sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is said to be the first Kagyupa monastery to be set up in Sikkim. Beautiful murals adorn the walls of this monastery. Today, it is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Sikkim with around 260 monks. The main annual puja is performed on the 28th and 29th days of the tenth month of the Tibetan Calendar.
