One of the oldest universities in India, University of Calcutta, founded in 1857, is located in
Kolkata. Modeled on the University of London in England, this State University has a number of campuses spread all over the metropolis and its suburbs.
The university has about 209 affiliated colleges spread over the districts of Kolkata, North 24 Parganas District, South 24 Parganas District, Howrah and Hooghly. Courses are offered in the faculties of agriculture, arts, commerce, social welfare, business management, education, journalism, library science, engineering and technology, fine arts, music and home science.
Asutosh Museum of Indian Art, the university museum, has a rich collection of sculptures, paintings, folk-art objects, textiles and terracotta.
