Saheed Minar

Formerly known as Octarloni Monument



Located at the Northern end of the Maidan, Saheed Minar is a high (Martyr's Memorial) monument erected in 1828. This was built in memory of Sir David Octarloni, who won the victory over Nepal army in 1814. The minar is 158 ft high, and has two balconies at the top. There are 198 stairs from the bottom to the first balcony and 25 stairs lead to the second balcony. From the top of Saheed Minar, one can have a panoramic view of Kolkata.
