Jalpaiguri District

Jalpaiguri is a beautiful district with numerous tea plantations and deep forests teeming with wildlife, situated in the foothills of lower Himalayas in North Bengal. It is bordered by Bangladesh, Bhutan and northeastern states of India.

The geographical area of Jalpaiguri District comprises two distinct tracts separated by the Teesta River. The region to the west is a level, densely populated expanse, growing rice, jute and sugarcane. The rest, known as the Western Duars, has six passes opening through the Sinchula Hills into Bhutan.

The district is spread over 6,200 sq km out of which about 30 percent is forestland. Besides wildlife safari, Jalpaiguri has a good scope for tea tourism and ethnic tourism.

Jute pressing, saw-milling and match manufacturing are the major industries. Jalpaiguri is also the chief agricultural distribution center of West Bengal.

Gorumara national park, Chapramari wildlife sanctuary, Buxa National Park, and Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary are the places of interest. Siliguri, the most important city in Darjeeling District is 45 km from the district headquarters Jalpaiguri.
