Kandi




Kandi is a sub-divisional town, 30 km south-west of Berhampore in Murshidabad District. This town is noted for the Kandi Palace which houses the regal temple of Radha Ballabha. Another landmark is the Rudradeba temple of Ruppur. A unique sculpture of the Boirochana incarnation of Buddha with snakes coiled around his neck, positioned in the police station compound, is an awesome sight.

Panchthupi village, about 15 km from here is the major attraction nearby. Remnants of a Buddhist Vihara called Barokonar Deul dating back to the Pala Dynasty is an antique feature of this village. The Panchayatan Shiva temple, locally known as Nabaratna has an exceptional architectural style. The Singhavihani Temple and the Jor-Bangla Shyamsundar Temple are also places of interest.

A manuscript form of the Bhagavad Gita, believed to be written in the handwriting of Shri Chaitanya is kept at the Radha Gopinatha temple at Bharatpur, 13 km from Kandi. Salar Village noted for a unique blending of Hindu - Muslim cultures, Banwari temple of Banwaribad near Salar, built in the Mughal style, are other attractions around.

Berhampore is 195 km from Kolkata. Kandi can be accessed from Berhampore via road by taxis, buses and autorickshaws. Berhampore Court is the main station, which is connected with Sealdah Station at Kolkata.
