Sagar Island

Sagardwip, Earlier Known as Swetadwip

Sagardwip is one of the largest Sunderban islands situated where the river Ganges merges with the Bay of Bengal. It is at a distance of about 130 km from Kolkata. The lighthouse at Sagardwip offers a panoramic view of the surroundings.

The island is a famous Hindu pilgrimage center in India. There is a temple dedicated to Kapil Muni close to the beach. Gangasagar Mela, celebrated here on Makara Sankranti day (mid January), is the largest fair in West Bengal.
