Gangtok



Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is one of the important hill stations in the north-east India. Gangtok, which literally means ‘top of a hill’, is also the largest town in Sikkim. It lies on a ridge, at an altitude of 1547 m above sea level, overlooking the picturesque Ranipool River. Gangtok is famous for its monasteries and the magnificent views of the Himalayas. Kolkata is 720 km south of Gangtok.

Major tourist interest in and around the city include the Rustomji Park , Do-Drul Chorten (Stupa), Orchid Sanctuary, Enchey Monastery, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, Tashi View Point, Orchidarium, Flower Exhibition Centre, Rumtek Monastery and Phodong Monastery.

The nearest airport is Civil Enclave Bagdogra at Bagdogra (124 km), West Bengal. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is the closest railhead, which is 125 km from Gangtok. Regular buses connect Gangtok with Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri. Helicopter service is available between Gangtok and Bagdogra.
