Maithon

Maithon, literally means mother’s abode, is a picturesque place situated about 48 km east of Dhanbad in Jharkhand.

The major attraction here is a reservoir and a lake, which spreads over an area of 65 sq km. The dam, built across the Barakar River, has been designed with the main object to control flood. It boasts an underground power station, which is the first of its kind in south-east Asia.

The lake has superb facilities to enjoy activities such as boating and fishing. Besides, a deer park and a bird sanctuary can also be visited. Another landmark is an ancient temple named Awake Temple at Kalyameswari.

Inspection Bungalow and Rest House, apart from private lodges and hotels, are here to cater to the accommodation needs.

The nearest airport is at Ranchi. Nearest railhead is at Barakar (8 km). The place has good road communication, and regular buses ply to Maithon from Dhanbad, Asansol and Barakar.
