Chamoli District




Chamoli is one of the hill districts of Uttaranchal. It is surrounded by the districts of Uttarkashi in the north-west, Pithoragarh and Rudraprayag in the south-west, Almora in the south-east and Tehri Grahwal in the west. The total geographical area is around 7,690 sq km. Gopeshwar is the district headquarters. The people speak Garhwali, Hindi and English.

The climate largely depends on the altitude. Most of the rainfall occurs during the period June to September. The Alaknanda is the major river. The major tourist destinations are Auli, Badrinath, Charanpaduka, Gopeshwar, Hemkund Sahib, Joshimath and Nanda Devi National Park. Triyugi Narayan Temple, Yamunotri Temple and Yogadhyan Badri Temple are the famous temples. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, and the nearest railway station is at Rishikesh.
