Bageshwar

Bageshwar is a pilgrimage town situated at the confluence of the Gomati and Sarayu rivers and is 90 km north of Almora. The town, which is thought to be blessed by Shiva, is dotted with many shrines of various gods and goddesses and had attracted saints and sages through the ages, with its spiritual magnetism.

In Puranas, Bageshwar has been described as the place that liberates one from the bondage of birth and death. The Shivratri fair held here in March is a major draw, attended by hundreds of devotees from far and near. Points of pilgrimage include the Bagnath Temple Complex, Chandika Temple (1.5 km), Gauri Udiyar, and Shri Haru temple (5 km).

Apart from its religious importance, Bageshwar is also famous as a trekker’s paradise. The base of the Gomati river valley serves as a suitable base for hikes to Pindari, Kafni and Sundardunga glaciers.

Nearest airport is at Pant Nagar (206 km). Kathgodam (180 km) is the closest railway station. Bageshwar is suitably connected by road with Almora (90 km), Nainital (137 km) and Chaukori (47 km).
