Lansdowne

Named after Lord Lansdowne

Situated at an altitude of 1,706 m on a hill, on the Kotware- Pauri road is the beautiful town of Lansdowne. Named after Lord Lansdowne, its founder, the city had been a popular hill station with the Britishers. It was also a major base of activities for the freedom fighters from the British Garhwal region before independence. The climate of the town is characterized by cold winters and pleasant summers. Garhwali, Hindi, and English are the major spoken languages in this part of the world.

Surrounded by thick Oak and blue Pine forests, Lansdowne is free from the hustle and bustle of a normal hill station. Tip-n-Top, Santoshi Mata Temple, and Church Point are some points of attraction in the town. The command office of the famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army is situated here. The annual ‘Shardotsav’, organized here during autumn attracts a big crowd. The war memorial at the Parade Ground of the Garhwal Rifles Center is another point of interest for the tourists.

Kotdwar (45 km) is the closest railway station. Jollygrant is the nearest airport. Lansdowne has regular bus services to Delhi (295 km), Haridwar (95 km) and Dehradun (150 km).
