Dehradun Valley is situated between the west Himalayan ranges in the north and the Siwalik Range in the south. It lies at a mean elevation of 485 m. It is bordered by the Yamuna in the west and the Ganga in the east. The valley has also some other perennial streams. Dehradun valley is also well watered by Asan, Tons, Song, Suswa and Jakhan rivers. It is an ideal spot for bird-watchers and trekkers.
The mountain slopes in the valley are surrounded by mixed forests of sal (shorea robusta trees). The flat areas of the valley are used as agricultural land. During the monsoons the valley receives 200 cm rainfall. Some of the trekking spots in the valley are Karvapani, Rajaji National Park, Thano, Lachhiwala, Barkot and Asan Barrage.
