Bhagavata

Bhagavata Purana, Srimad Bhagavata

Bhagavata is the most significant among the 18 Puranas composed by sage Veda Vyasa. It is also known as Bhagavata Purana and has been translated into various languages. Bhagavata Purana is divided into twelve skandhas (sections), and contains 18,000 verses. The most interesting, the tenth skandha, describes the life and activities of Lord Krishna. All the incarnations of Lord Vishnu are portrayed in the Bhagavata Purana and hence it is dear to Vishnu devotees. In this book Kapila and Buddha are considered as the incarnations of Vishnu. It is said that it is auspicious to gift this Purana text on the full moon day in the month of Prosthapada (September). Agni Purana mentions that it is to be given along with the golden image of a lion.
