Swami Prabhupada



A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada was born in 1896, in Kolkata, West Bengal. His spiritual master was Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami. Swami Prabhupada got the title 'Bhaktivedanta' in 1947. At the age of fifty-four, Swami Prabhupada retired from married life, adopting sanyasa. His life's major work is the translation of the eighteen-thousand-verse Srimad Bhagavatam.

Swami Prabhupada left India for the United States of America in 1965. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada then founded the worldwide organization, ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) in 1966. In 1972, he introduced the Vedic system of primary and secondary education in the West and guided his disciples, to make ISKCON a worldwide spiritual organisation.

His writings have been translated into over fifty languages by The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, which was established in 1972, to publish the works of Swami Prabhupada. An English fortnightly 'Back to Godhead' started by Swamy Prabhupada in 1944, is still very popular and in demand worldwide.

Swami Prabhupada died on November 14, 1977.
