Sitapur




Sitapur, the administrative headquarters of Sitapur District, is a historic town situated on the banks of Sarayan River, in Uttar Pradesh. It was a military center under the British and is home of a military cantonment. Sitapur lies on the Lucknow-Delhi highway ( National Highway 24), about 90 km north-west of the state capital, Lucknow.

Sitapur, christened after Sita - the wife of Lord Ram, was founded by king Vikarmaditya. The town is closely associated with the ancient, medieval and modern history of the country. It is often referred to as a land of seer and Sufis; Veda Vyasa wrote the epic Mahabharata on this holy land.

Places of tourist interests include Ilasiya Bal Vanodyan (Ilasia Park), Mahavir Udyan (Tikunia Park), Sarojini Vatika and Vaidehi Vatika. Sitapur is one of among the religious places visited during 'Panch Dham Yatra’. Namisharanya and Dargahs of Hazrat Makhdoom Sahib and Hazrat Gulzar Shah are some religious spots worth visiting in the vicinity.

Nearest airport is at Lucknow. Sitapur Railway Station is a major rail junction, situated on the meter gauge line from Lucknow to Bareilly and the broad gauge line connecting Gorakhpur and Delhi.
