Bahraich

Bahraich, the administrative headquarters of Bahraich District, is on the banks of a tributary of the Ghaghara River. It is a major agricultural trade center and sugar-processing base of Uttar Pradesh. Rice, corn (maize), wheat, and gram (chickpeas) are cultivated in the fields surrounding the town. Lucknow is 125 km southwest of Bahraich.

First references about the town had been found in the texts describing the invasion of Sayyid Salar Masood in 1303. About 3 Km north of Bahraich is the dargah of Syyed Salar Masood and is a major point of pilgrimage for Hindus and Muslims in the state. The town came under many rules until the British gained control in the late 18th century.

The ruins of a Buddhist monastery in the city outskirts is a major attraction.

The nearest airport is at Lucknow. Bahraich Railway Station is on the Nanpara- Basti line.
