Muzaffarnagar District of Saharanpur division lies in the northern part of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated in the fertile planes of the rivers Ganges and Yamuna. Muzaffarnagar is surrounded by Meerut District in the south, Saharanpur District in the north, Karnal District of Haryana in the west, and the river Ganges in the east separating the Bijnor District. It has an area of 4,008 sq km and a population of 3.7 million.

Muzaffarnagar has great historical significance since recent excavations carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India has proved that this area was a site of ancient Harappan civilization. Gold ring like objects and other precious stones discovered here suggest Harappan culture. This region was also a trade center in ancient times.

Paper mills, sugar mills, and steel rolling mills are here. Important tourist and pilgrim centers are Shiv Chowk, Boharon Ka Mandir, Shukartal (Yagaya Shala), Ganeshdham, Akshaya Wat, and Bahu Ki Mazar.
