Azamgarh

Azamgarh, the administrative headquarters of Azamgarh District, is a beautiful town situated on the banks of the Tons River, to the north of Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh. It was founded by Azam Khan in 1665.

This compact town lies on a level plane, hemmed from the three sides by the Tons River. Hence the town is flood prone during monsoons. Sugar milling and cotton weaving are the principal industries of the town.

Major tourist spots in the city are the old fort of Azam Shah and the famous Kunwar Singh Park.

Azamgarh is on Lucknow-Baliya state highway and is 269 km west of Lucknow.
