India | Uttar Pradesh | Mahoba

Mahoba, the ancient capital of the mighty Chandelas, is situated on the foot of Gokhar Hills - an offshoot of the Vindhyas. It lies 55 km north of Khajuraho, the temple- city of the Chandelas, and about 109 km north-east of Kalinjar Fort, in Uttar Pradesh.

The city derives its name from 'Mahotsava' – the great celebration performed by its founder Chandravarman, in the 9th century. Mahoba is dotted with various Buddhist and Jain temples built in the same style as the Khajuraho temples by the Chandela kings, who ruled over Bundelkhand between the 9th and the 11th centuries. Major tourist attractions include Kakramath Temple, Vijay Sagar Pakshi Vihar, Madan Sagar and the Sun Temple at Rahila Sagar.

The nearest airport is at Khajuraho (63 km). Mahoba has regular bus services to Chitrakut (125 km), Kanpur (155 km), Jhansi (165 km), Allahabad (245 km), Lucknow (240 km), Khajuraho (63 km), Banda (52 km) and Kalinjar (130 km).
