Chandellas, also known as Moon Dynasty, was an independent dynasty which ruled over the parts of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh from 9th century to the second half of the 13th century. Khajuraho was the historic capital of the Chandellas. Chandravarman is believed to be the founder of Chandela Empire.

The rulers Harsha and Yashovarma or Lakshavarma are the famous rulers of this dynasty. During this time several temples were constructed in Khajuraho. In the middle of the 13th century, the Chandella king Narasimha Deva was attacked by Bengal Governor Tughral Tughan Khan. King Narasimha Deva defeated him. He built the famous Sun Temple at Konark to commemorate his victory.
