Kaushambi



Kaushambi is a historic town situated on the banks of Yamuna, 51 km west of Allahabad, in Uttar Pradesh. It is an ancient center of learning for the Buddhists in North India.

Kaushambi was the erstwhile capital of the 'Vatsa Janpad' ruled by King Udyana. Kaushambi assumed prominence after the visit of Buddha in the 6th and 9th year after his enlightenment. In the Buddhist texts of that time, it had been described as a flourishing city on the banks of Yamuna.

Places of tourist interest include the ruins of the ancient fort, the monastery of Ghositarama and various other Buddhist structures.

The nearest airport is at Varanasi. Bharwari Railway Station is the nearest railhead. National Highway 2 passes through Kaushambi.
